What is the Safety Trailer?
In 2010 we received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to purchase an interactive fire safety trailer. The fire safety trailer has improved training standards for members of the Pike County Volunteer Fire Departments. In addition, we will be able to train new recruits in a timelier manner to meet the requirements of the Kentucky State Fire Commission. This interactive mobile training center allows us to visit each department to provide a standardize method of training the firefighters. This mobile unit mimics bedroom, kitchen and industrial fire scenarios. The simulator has features such as industrial lock-out training, kitchen props, bedroom scenarios, hazmat training tools package, 3 smart-dummies, smoke generator, advanced fire training, trainer’s digital fire system package, severe weather package, kitchen recognition package, industrial recognition package, generator, air conditioning, heat, sprinkler system and a camera system that can record training and used to critique what has been done during the training session.
Since 2010 during Fire Prevention Week in October we have visited elementary schools in Pike County, Floyd County and Rowan County. During Fire Prevention Week, we have educated thousands of students about fire prevention. We have taken the fire safety trailer to festivals in Perry County, Floyd County, Knott County, Letcher County, Whitley County, Clay County and Johnson County to display the fire safety trailer in hopes of educating parents and children about the importance of fire safety. Train adults to extinguish simulated kitchen fires that are intense and true to life, yet completely safe. Teach children what they should do in case of fire in their home, if they see smoke or feel a warm door. Instruct community members how to respond to various emergencies they might encounter in the home or workplace, from gas leaks to fire. The severe weather package utilizes sound, strobe effects and alerts to train your entire community to react in an emergency weather situation. People of every age can benefit from the lifesaving lessons learned in the realistic settings of our Fire Safety Trailer.
Simulations and Scenario’s
The BullsEye© is a state of the art training tool that uses digital flame generation and sensor technology to demonstrate proper fire extinguishment techniques. The system can sense the location of the trainee, if the trainee has properly aimed the extinguisher and if the trainee is properly sweeping the nozzle of the extinguisher. The system can also tell if the trainee has chosen the correct class of extinguisher. The system varies the digital flames in response, only extinguishing the fire if the proper technique is used. Depending on the class of fire and level of difficulty selected by the instructor, the flames will grow, diminish and respond as the trainee attempts to extinguish the simulated fire.
KITCHEN FIRE SCENARIO: Designed to resemble a real home kitchen, this setting uses heat, smoke, sound effects and digital flames to create an intense fire emergency. Challenges trainees of any age to respond correctly in this hands-on emergency response and hazard recognition training scenario. We can choose a combination of stove, oven and cabinet props and instruct trainees to use the proper P.A.S.S. technique to knock down the flames. The sparking microwave, smoking toaster, and smoking outlet show the hazards of improper use or placement of appliances and how to diminish a potential hazard. A chemical cabinet demonstrates how to properly store chemicals and prevent children from accessing dangerous materials. Overhead heaters, dense smoke, digital flames and sound effects combine to recreate the stress of an actual fire.
BEDROOM SCENARIO: We educate children and parents on the importance of E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home) and prepare them to conduct drills at home with the bedroom scenario. Show trainees and children how to feel a door for heat and block smoke with a pillow or towel and then evacuate to safety using the window and escape ladder. Additional props include a smoking outlet and air conditioner to simulate electrical fire hazards. Sound, smoke, fire effects, an interactive 9-1-1 phone, and an automatic smoke detector create an authentic emergency scene.
INDUSTRIAL EMERGENCY SCENARIO: We can train employees how to respond to a fire or Haz-Mat leak in the workplace in this industrial fire scenario. An electrical box shorts, causing sparks to ignite the adjacent parts washer. The parts washer creates a hot, smoky fire which then ignites the nearby trashcan resulting in a full scale industrial emergency. The industrial scenario can be as simple or complex as you need. It can include numerous industrial elements that may become hazardous to a worker, such as a leaking gas manifold or chemical drum, overflowing chemical test tubes, or a gas fume hood that has caught fire.
